Så här skriver Denis Gifford i sin bok 100-years of comics, jag citerar på engelska: It was Browne who established British comic style, with his clean linework and neatly spotted solids that suited the cheap blocks and cheaper paper that made such a mess of more detailed drawing. His Cartoons were full of fun, too, and he liked to capture action, which quickly became an essential for the depiction of slapstick. Browne’s strips had no regular characters. His heroes changed week by week to suit the story. Then on 16 May 1896 two of his tramps caught the fancy of G.H. Cantle, editor of Chips and the 57-year saga of «Weary Willie and Tired Tim » was born.
Tom Browne not only created «Weary Willie and Tired Tim» the tramps who would fill the front page of Illustrated Chips from 1896 to 1953, in the process he created British comic style.
