Weary Willie and Tired Tim among the longest-lived of British comic strip heroes were created by Tom Browne 1896. Although there were earlier regular characters than Willie and Tim, their success undoubtedly led to the establishment of the Victorian comic paper, and of Tom Brownes’ style as a comic artist. His characters and style were widely copied by other cartoonists and editors hoping to cash in on the hobo bandwagon, and even Browne was paid well.
Browne abandoned his «World Famous Tramps’ in 1900, and other artists were tried. The strip finally went to the exellent pen of Percy Cocking around 1912, and he continued to draw them to the end, some 40 years.
